Obituary for Stanley A. Leger

Stanley “Stan” Adlore Leger, age 88 of Mound, formerly of Princeton, entered eternity surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 21, 2017. Stan was born in Osseo, Minnesota, in 1929 to Adlore and Amelia (Greeninger) Leger. He was the oldest of eight children and learned early in life the value of hard work and dedication in all he encountered. As a young child, Stan moved with his parents to a farm in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, and lived there for ten years before moving to a farm in Osseo, Minnesota, when he was 12-years-old. By age 13, Stan had to stop attending school to work full-time on the family farm.

As a young man, Stan loved to go dancing. He met Rosemary Reiser one evening at a dance, and knew immediately that she was “the one.” Stan joined the army in 1953 where he served for two years.

Stan and Rosemary married in 1956 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Wayzata. The newlyweds purchased the Osseo farm where Stan was raised and made it home for their growing family. In 1966, they moved to a dairy farm in Princeton, Minnesota. Stan was an exemplary dairy farmer and took great pride in his profession. He built an outstanding herd of registered Holsteins, earning recognition and respect as an honest and trustworthy farmer, friend, and neighbor. He won multiple professional awards including Outstanding Young Farmer and Outstanding Dairy Farmer of the Year. He was active in his community and served on the Princeton School Board.

Stan was a loving, generous father who helped his seven daughters and two sons get a good start in life. Though Stan never had the opportunity to go to high school, he was proud to help support all nine of his children obtain college degrees. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children. He was involved with his family in 4-H and regional cattle shows, and his registered Holsteins won many awards. Faith was an integral part of family life, and on Sundays everyone squeezed into the family car (five in the front seat, six in the back seat) to attend Mass. Stan shared his memorable baritone voice with the church choir for decades. He was truly the salt of the earth. His most treasured qualities were his talent for storytelling, infectious vibrant energy and laugh, integrity, and tender heart (especially for Rosie).

Stan loved music, and it was always playing in the house and barn. He also loved competition and playing all types of games, particularly when he was the CHAMPION! No matter how busy life was on the farm, Stan always made time for fun with games ranging from kickball and ping pong to backgammon and Yahtzee. He especially loved playing cards and was known to many as “the best card player in Princeton.”

In retirement, Stan and Rosemary moved to a home east of Princeton where Stan enjoyed entertaining, maintaining their seven-acre lawn and, of course, playing cards. Stan was a member of many card clubs and no matter where he went, it seemed he always found an opportunity to play cards in locations ranging from Dalbo and Moose Lodge to Bud’s Place, the homes of friends and around the wood stove in his own home. Stan and Rosemary also traveled internationally and domestically and were Arizona snowbirds.

Stanley is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Theresa Zachman and Alice Leuer.
He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 61 years, Rosemary; his children, Sue (Kelly) Spencer, Ann (Jack) Brau, Connie (Pete) Koehn, Margie (Dan) Saatzer, Rene (Tim) Kopen, Yvonne (Tom) Schuneman, Tony (Itsuyo) Leger, Norm Leger, and Joyce (Greg) Getchell; 26 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Ruthie, Vernon, Willie, Judy, Evelyn; many other relatives and friends.
