Zimmer, age 84, who passed away at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Sauk Rapids on July 8, 2017. Father Timothy Gapinski will officiate, with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 16, from 4-8:00 p.m. at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in St. Cloud and one hour prior to the services on Monday, July 17, at the church. Parish prayers at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in St. Cloud.

Sabina “Bena” A. Zimmer was born October 23, 1932 in St. Anthony, MN to Albert and Mary (Puntsack) Vos. As a child, German was the language spoken in her home. It wasn’t until she went to grade school that she learned English. Her family moved to the St. Cloud area during the WWII era. She graduated from St. Cloud Tech in 1950, an accomplishment of which she was very proud. Her ties to St. Cloud Tech continued. She was a member of numerous Reunion Planning committees. She married Donny Zimmer on May 26, 1951 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Bena and Donny weathered the ups and downs of life for 51 years. Bena was proud to have been a stay-at-home Mom. Though their kids were skeptical, Bena and Donny professed their six kids were their greatest treasures.

Though a woman of small stature, Bena had a bigger than life personality. She lived and loved with gusto. Being with people brought her immense joy. People energized her. She loved having family and friends stop over to visit. Even shopping was a social event because she engaged people wherever she went.

Because of her reaching out and engaging in the lives of others, over the years she became a second mother to non-family members, and in the family, a second grandmother, the favorite aunt. Birthdays and special events always meant a card or a little gift. She demonstrated her caring in her own unique Bena style, which included gathering strays into her family, welcoming and embracing them. She is truly leaving a legacy. This little woman is loved and will be missed.
Bena was down-to-earth and earthy, as one of her Bena’isms demonstrates: ‘Soap is cheap.’ Intertwined with her earthiness was her living life with passion, and living life well. The Bena list of passions is long, from her family and friends, her many collections, volunteering, traveling, her love of books and reading, to her photo albums. Her philosophy of “If one is good, six is better,” will last forever with her kids..

Bena was a long time member and volunteer at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waite Park. She enthusiastically served at church functions, she was a diehard funeral dinner worker and Bazaar chance distributor, and she provided unstinting support for the CCD Program (Religious Education). Without most people noticing, Bena helped keep the church spick and span and ready for large occasions and the day-to-day activities of the church.

Bena assisted with the Great Books Reading Program. As a volunteer and secretary to the Friends of the Library, she most enjoyed welcoming and engaging with the varied people who frequent the 'Friends' shop---many of whom would stop for a book and leave with the bonus of a new friend. Closer to home, she loved her hostess duties at the Waite Park Senior Citizen Centre, enjoying a game of cards or just a chat with both long term and new friends.

Over the years Bena and Donny enjoyed traveling with family and friends in campers, on their Honda Goldwing, and in later years, in their car. They saw much of the United States. Socializing with the Burlington Northern Group was another source of enjoyment for them.
Bena is survived by her children, Linda (Jerry) Gohl of Apple Valley, Sandy (Dean Holm) Zimmer of Willow River, Kathy (Buzz) Snyder of Sauk Rapids, Jim (Gail) Zimmer of Waite Park, Diane (John Tarkanyi) Zimmer of Bristol, England, Karen (Scottie Devor) Zimmer of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Megan Gohl, Joe Zimmer, Patrick Gohl, Holly Zimmer, Zach Zimmer Hennen; great grandchildren, Connor Breth, Henry Gohl, Lily Rouvrais, Cassidy Vallevand, Brodie Ray Hennen, Ian Gohl, Royce Gohl; and many loving friends and family.
Bena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donny in 2003; brother, Ervin Vos; and sister, Beatrice Everts.

The family wishes to thank the loving and supportive staffs of the St. Cloud Hospital, the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, and the St. Croix Hospice Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. Cloud Friends of the Library.
