Obituary for Nettie I. Gergen

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday November 13, 2017 at 10:00 am in the chapel at the Good Shepherd Community, Sauk Rapids for Nettie Gergen, age 97, who passed away Thursday at Good Shepherd. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the Good Shepherd Chapel. Rev. Bill Vos will officiate and burial will be at the MN State Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley, Little Falls. Arrangements are entrusted to William Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Sauk Rapids.

Nettie was born July 10, 1920 in Doland, SD to Ben and Laura (Merrill) Heer. After she graduated high school Nettie assisted her father in running the family farm, she also worked for the South Dakota Benevolent Society for a time before and after her time in the service. Nettie enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp on November 11, 1943 and served at the United States Pentagon until February 9, 1946.

Nettie married John Gergen on November 10, 1948 in Clark, SD. The couple farmed near Naples and Doland SD. After living in Texas the couple settled in central Minnesota where they resided in St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell and Sauk Rapids. John and Nettie were members of the Sacred Heart Parish in Sauk Rapids and would have celebrated 69 years of marriage this year.

Nettie enjoyed reading, being a homemaker and being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Nettie is survived by her son, John W (Diane) Gergen of Waite Park; daughter, Shirley (Gary) Carton of Spearfish, SD; grandchildren, Travis (Brenda) Gergen of Poplar, WI, Teri (Dan) Coor of Summerset, SD; and great-grandchildren, Ashton Gergen of Minneapolis, MN and Aaron, Addyson, Archer and Abram Gergen of Poplar, WI.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Gergen; brothers, Frank, Ed, and Lyle; and her sister, Loraine.
