Obituary for James "Jimmy" Johnson

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018, at 11 AM at Christ Church in Otsego with visitation one hour prior for Jimmy Johnson, who died unexpectedly on January 16, 2018.

James Lloyd Johnson was born on February 24, 1945 to Lloyd and Georgia (Benson) Johnson in Hendricks, Minnesota. He and his twin sister were the youngest of five. They joined their twin siblings, LeRoy and Louise and sister, Carol. The Johnson family made their home in Lac Qui Parle Village, Minnesota. Jimmy attended a little country school and then Milan schools, graduating from Milan High School in 1963. He met the love of his life, Joyce Quenemoen, the fall after graduation and was immediately smitten! They were married on April 3, 1965 and made their home in St. Paul. To this union, two daughters were born, Kelli and Amy.

Jimmy was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking many trips to Canada, Wyoming, and Colorado. He and Joyce made many memories while camping and fishing with their children and friends up at the lake. After spending 20 years in Crystal, he and Joyce owned and enjoyed running hobby farms both in Otsego for 20 years, and currently in Princeton for the past 11 years. He loved all animals, but especially his horses and his dogs.

Jimmy was a family man, and he and Joyce did everything together. They would often be holding hands when no one was looking. An amazing teacher of wisdom and kindness, he led by example and could always “Jimmy Jack” things into working order. His grandchildren gained expertise from “Gramps” by spending time wrenching on cars and messing with guns. He was a fan of Nascar, Westerns, creepshows, the “Price is Right,” all day news, and enjoyed an ice cold Amberbock or hot black coffee over a good conversation. His world revolved around his great-grandbabies. They had him wrapped around their little fingers.

His faith was important to him and he had a close relationship with God. Jimmy was loved by everyone and touched many people in his profound ways. Everyone called him “Jimmy” because he said, “Jimmy makes you smile!”

Jimmy will be deeply missed by his wife of nearly 53 years, Joyce; daughters, Kelli (Sean) Maki and Amy (Kris) Hicks; grandchildren, Eric (Carol) Johnson, Kevin (Mallory) Maki, Tommy “Jack” Maki, Madison Maki, Wyatt (fiancé, Jenae) Hicks, Sydney and Dylan Hicks; 7 great-grandchildren, Renee, Morgan, Owen, baby “Finn,” Aiden, Skylar, and Reece; his sisters, Louise Cram and Carol Cram; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Al) Jansky-Wachman; brother-in-law, David Quenemoen; and very dear family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his twin sister, Janet Marie at age 6; brother LeRoy “Johnny” (Lorraine) Johnson; and brother-in-law, Harold Cram.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Jimmy’s family.
