Obituary for Gerald "Jerry" S. Tweed

Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 7 PM with visitation for family and friends from 5-7 PM at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Princeton, for Gerald “Jerry” Tweed who died on Monday, January 1, 2018.

Gerald Selmer Tweed was born in Detroit, Michigan to Selmer and Ellen (Lund) Tweed on May 21, 1931. He was the second of four children, growing up in Minnetonka after the family moved to Minnesota when Jerry was young. He graduated from Deephaven High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1958. Jerry married Georgia (Staples) on February 25, 1951. To this union, two children were born – Vicki and Lisa. Jerry and Georgia began their life with their children in Glen Lake, MN. Tragedy struck on Labor Day in 1962 when Georgia was hit and killed by a car.

Jerry met Dolores Peterson in 1964 at the “Snake Pit” through mutual friends. Just two years later they were married in Watertown, South Dakota. They made their home in Minnetonka, moving years later to Hamel. Their cabin was located on Green Lake in Princeton where they would spend many weekends in the summer with family. They would eventually build their retirement home on Green Lake and reside there. Lisa and Vicki have many wonderful memories of time with their dad, “stealing” green apples from the neighbor’s yard, shopping at “Thrifty” on Sunday afternoons, riding the Ferris wheel at the Excelsior Amusement Park, and having their dad come to visit after work and jumping into Lake Minnetonka. In winter, he’d let them drive the car on the frozen lake and in summer, he was known to jump off the Gray’s Bay Bridge!

Dancing, snowmobiling, and fishing were some of Jerry’s passions. He and Dolly were part of the Rum River Ramblers Motor Home Club and spent many of their winters in Florida with friends. His family was very important to him and he took every chance he had to fish on the lake with his grandchildren.

Jerry was an original member of “The Gray’s Bay Boys,” a committed member of the Princeton American Legion, and the Cement Mason’s Union. He was a cement contractor for over 50 years and owned his own business, “G.S. Tweed, Inc.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Georgia; brothers, Milton and Harlan; and his sister, Diane.

Jerry will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Dolly; his daughters, Lisa (Scott) Matson of Mound, Vicki (Jerry) Klitzka of Orono; step-son, David Peterson of Princeton; step-daughters, Lori (Chuck) Hurley of Brooklyn Center, Lona (Brad) Berglund of Big Lake; grandchildren, Steve Berglund, Shawn Peterson, Eric Berglund, Kate Hurley, Jenny Machousky, David Peterson, PJ Lyons, Taylor Matson, and Megan Matson; and six great-grandchildren.

A June 2018 burial is planned at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Princeton, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Jerry’s family.
