Obituary for Donna J. Hardwig

Donna Hardwig, 90, of St. Cloud passed away at the Good Shepherd Community Home on Saturday. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Saint Cloud. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in St. Cloud from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery, Waite Park.

Donna was born in St. Cloud to Raymond and Margaret (Gleason) Theisen. She married Lawrence (Larry) Pendergast August 21, 1948 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waite Park. In this union four children were born: Paul (Jeanette) Ft. Myers, FL, Mark (Teri) Deer Park, WI, Michelle (John) Foley St. Cloud, and Kelley (Valerie) Sartell.

While raising her family and caring for four teenage nieces and nephews, Donna returned to the College of St. Benedict to earn her Bachelors of Music degree. She was later employed by the St. Cloud School District as an elementary band teacher at McKinley School in Waite Park and later at other schools within District 742. She enjoyed playing and teaching piano at home to her many students. Donna was a deeply religious person who enjoyed a bond and friendships with many neighbors and church members and a favorite lifelong friend Kathleen Heying. She overcame many of her own health issues while always caring more about the wellbeing of her children and grandchildren.

On June 25, 1994 Donna married Paul Hardwig at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waite Park.
In her later years she enjoyed dancing, her winter trips to Arizona with Paul and all the friendships of her widower’s group and their potluck dinners. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry, and sister Joan Augustine. She is survived by her husband, Paul, her four children and step-son Jim Hardwig of Homer, AK, sisters Jackie (Jerry) Cronquist and Marge (Jim) Brutger, six grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeff) Abbott, Allison and Andrea Pendergast, Zachary and Leah Simoneau, Kaylynn Pendergast, and one great-grandchild, Cole Abbott.

Memorials are preferred to the American Breast Cancer Foundation. Her family wishes to express their thanks for the loving care she received from the staffs of the St. Cloud Hospital and the Good Shepherd Community Home in Sauk Rapids.
